The R&R HoF is a joke, and some complaint or other over the inductees seems to come up here every year around this time (remember BryanE?), and i have myself opined on the matter, and yet despite my dismissal of the R&R Hall (and institutions & awards of similar ilk, e.g., nobel, pulitzer, oscars, baseball HoF, etc. ad nauseum) i still find myself reacting in some form or fashion. As for abba, who cares, they were a novelty act that stunk up the planet like a vile weed for far too long, and when i happen to overhear their vapid & weak songs, i shudder much in the same way i did when i was ten. As for Iggy Pop, there has never been (and never will be again) a more mesmerizing, more fascinating, more perfectly rock & roll style of lead singer to grace the stage. Many pretenders, many poseurs, many imitators, yes, but only one Ig.

I am a huge fan of the literary Pulitzers - cannot recall where they have steered me wrong (though my recall is suspect at times)

(yes, i am a admitted literary snob)

oh hey Don, no doubt not every selection is questionable, and with the lit. pulitzers probably less so, but with that particular "award" i'd say the criticism is of those continually passed over:

totally agree that several authors have been "unnecessarily" or unfairly passed over. at times it seems like morality/morals (either excessive or absence of) come into play where they have no place (never mind the politics of the particular "day"). the pulitzer in lit aint supposed to be a nobel peace prize - lol.

another good example would be Thomas Pynchon, whose "Gravity's Rainbow" was a shoe-in until complaints of its gross indecency finally "swayed" the judges/board. such a shame that one of THE greatest novels (though admittedly one of the toughest reads outside of Finnegans Wake) of the 20th century got "hosed."

Hope all is well old friend!!

(glad you posted - i havent read Greene in well over 20 years and have completely forgotten his writing style, thematic interplays, and narrative structure - now i have been mentally jostled enough to go out, pick up one of his books, and give him a long overdue read.)

The one award that never disappoints, never raises the specter of tainted votes and purchased prizes is the one, the only, the Forum Credenza! At least that's what I am shooting for...just wait til you see who wins the next one. Of course, since I am the only one that cares, and the one that awards them, and only when I get something, it sorta works out nicely...pretty clear cut when someone deserves one.

Well, at least this is something:

"Induction attendees will at least get a Hollies reunion tonight, apparently, and the Stooges have already been doing the reunion circuit for a while."

Heard something about IgPop; anyone know the list of inductees? Sorry--take pity on a completely out of the loop old fart, please...

Ah, do I have it right: ABBA, Genesis, Hollies and one of my favs, Jimmy Cliff? Stooges too, I think?

"ABBA, Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, The Hollies and the Stooges will become the latest inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, officials said.

Other inductees this year include individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award -- record executive David Geffen and songwriters Jeff Barry, Otis Blackwell, Ellie Greenwich, Barry Mann, Mort Shuman, Jesse Stone and Cynthia Weil."
